I have been providing counseling services for children, adolescents, adults, couples and their families in the Charlottesville, VA area for over 20 years. I earned my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology in 1969 from the College of William and Mary. I then studied at the University of Virginia, receiving a Master's Degree in Education in 1974 and, after teaching for nine years, a Specialist's Degree in Counseling in 1986. I am skilled in family therapy, communication psychology, behavioral psychology and brief solution focused methods for resolving problems of daily living. It has been my experience that developing supportive family and social relationships is effective medicine for helping people deal better with depression, anxiety, communication problems, marital issues, and a wide variety of stress related illnesses. I also have skills in survival and primitive technology which I use to provide hands on activity and connection in my work with adolescents.
I live about 15 miles south of Charlottesville, Virginia, about a mile from where I grew up. In my spare time, I enjoy creating things large and small from natural materials, making music, and being actively involved in the natural world. I am an elder at Cove Presbyterian Church.
I am happily married to Polly, my spouse of 35 years, and have a grown son, Jonathan. Our family's struggles and triumphs over the years help give me perspective in working with others' family relationships.
